Educational Philosophy: Nature as the Organizing Principal

At the White Barn Children's Centre, we believe that nature serves as the foundation for all learning experiences. By immersing children in the natural world, we create an environment that sparks curiosity, wonder, and a deep connection to the Earth.

Cognitive Development

Social & Emotional Development

Social & Emotional Development

We nurture children's innate love of learning through a rich, experiential, and emergent curriculum. By following their interests and curiosity, we create a learning environment that fosters critical thinking, problem-solving skills, and a lifelong love for knowledge.

Social & Emotional Development

We place great emphasis on fostering self-confidence, empathy, and social skills. Through activities that encourage self-awareness, collaboration, conflict resolution, and finding solutions, children develop strong interpersonal relationships and emotional intelligence.

Physical Development

Social & Emotional Development

Physical Development

We believe in building resiliency and promoting physical health through active play, appropriate risk-taking, and self-regulation. Regardless of the seasons or weather conditions, children engage in outdoor activities that strengthen their bodies, develop gross and fine motor skills, and instill a sense of adventure and exploration.

Best Practices in Early Childhood & Environmental Education

Our approach integrates developmentally appropriate methods that are grounded in the latest research in early childhood and environmental education. We continuously strive to provide optimal learning experiences that align with children's developmental stages and individual needs.

We value and encourage creativity as a vital aspect of children's growth. Through art, storytelling, and imaginative play, we provide opportunities for self-expression, problem-solving, and the development of a rich imagination.

Spiritual Development

Direct experience with the wonders of nature cultivates awe, reverence, and respect for the natural world. We believe that fostering children's spiritual connection to nature is essential for their overall well-being and their understanding of their place within the larger ecological web.

Health & Wellness

Creative Development

Health & Wellness

We strictly adhere to state guidelines for immunizations, ensuring a safe and healthy environment for all our little learners. Our dedicated school nurse actively promotes well-being through engaging physical activities and encourages healthy food choices, complemented by food provocations that educate children on the origins of their food and the importance of nourishing their bodies.

Educational Goals

  • Prepare each child socially and academically to succeed.
  • Develop a sense of place and foster a deep connection to nature.
  • Cultivate a strong, supportive, inclusive community between classmates, families, and preschool staff.
  • Enable each child to reach their full potential by addressing their social, emotional, and academic needs and supporting their growth.
